Artist Statement
This series of hand-built ceramic sculptures came about after many hours spent walking and photographing discoveries in Gunaikurnai country the land of the Brataualung people. This magical coastal area near Wilsons Promontory is rugged and lush. Rock formations and vegetation on land and beneath the water continually change with the tides, revealing a rich source of inspiration: sea sponges, shells, algae, kelp, stones, and coral pulled in by the clear glistening water lay on the sand creating a collage of colours and textures.
'Glistening' is particularly inspired by Kelp forests floating, swirling, and tumbling under the wavering water line obscured and magnified revealing the deep rich algae and the reflection of the water.

Bettina Willner's practice considers the connection between material, form, nature, architecture and memory within contemporary ceramics. Organic structures, textural and goldene glazes are characteristics of her sculptural pieces, and, in combination, produce objects that sit between sculpture, painting and drawing.
