Artist Statement

I recently read the book "The Lightmaker's Manifesto: How To Work For Change Without Losing Your Joy" and was very inspired by Karen Walrond's words and outlook. This drawing explores what it means to be a "lightmaker", in a literal and surreal sense.

Artist Profile

Born: 1987

Hometown: Kansas City

Based in: Kansas City

Brittany Noriega is a visual artist and arts community organizer living and working in Kansas City. Treading the balance between reality and fiction, she creates large-scale drawings based in real world experience that extend beyond and create narrative tales of fiction. “What would we look like if our behaviors manifested on us, physically?”, “Where do we go between grief and growth?”

With a background in studio art, sociology, and psychology, her illustrations and drawings focus on sparking conversations during times of change, struggle and revival. She believes that we are all stronger when working together and hopes to use her artwork to open up discussions on difficult topics in new ways.
Brittany was born in Kansas City and traveled the world at a young age. Through military travels she had the opportunity to live and learn in Okinawa, Japan, Turkey, Italy, and various locations throughout the United States. Learning in this way opened up new doors and it was here that sparked her love for humanity and all of the different ways that people communicate and express themselves.

Brittany has worked on her personal art development and community-based projects since moving back to Kansas City in 2015. She is a 2021 Inspiration Grant recipient and has won multiple awards in the past few years. Her artwork is shown publicly throughout the region and can be found in private collections throughout the United States.
