About the art
Artist statement
'Interference Portrait 3', 3rd from a series of four, is a gallery wrap canvas print that features a lady’s face who is more assertive and hopeful and appears to prevail against the busyness of the world. The woman’s gaze is solid, despite its air of mindful concern, a rebuke of traditional acceptable expressions of female modesty, allure or deferment.
**Limited Edition of 5 | archival inks on a stretched edge gallery wrap ILFORD GALERIE Canvas Natural | size: 90x90cm**
'Interferences Portrait' is part of my abstract photographic series called 'Crossing Boundaries', which represents a further step in my experimentation with the boundaries of representation and abstraction. The series is heavily influenced by my personal experience of crossing between two cultures. In considering my approach to this project, I reflected on my natural inclination to conform to society's expectations, which is fuelled by worries about what other community members might think of me — even within contemporary photography. I had to re-evaluate this approach to be more comfortable with my life choices. This challenging process has ultimately steered me towards my true course. The series reinforces a positive message about breaking through unnecessarily restrictive boundaries in life.
By transgressing the boundaries of image and method, the series reflects the idea that inspired it: overcoming boundaries in life. This expresses my personal experience of learning to renegotiate this relationship with the customs and conventions of society.
Each work in this series is made through experimental hybrid processes and techniques, including digital photography, analogue printing, and remaking, which builds layers of meaning into each piece.
