Artist Profile
Born: 1978
Hometown: Napa, California
Based in: Queens, New York
Caetlynn Booth was born and raised in California, and now lives in Queens, New York. She studied printmaking and sculpture at U.C. Davis in California, and then painting in graduate school at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Booth spent two years in Germany, with a Fulbright grant to study history paintings in Berlin and to create a new body of work based on her research. She works in watercolor and gouache on paper, and oil on paper, panel, or canvas, and many of her paintings are modular and can be hung individually or in groups. Booth's work depicts in-between domains that explore both internal and external spaces, and in alternating between bodies of work in the studio, cross-pollination and unexpected relationships develop between her paintings. Each body of work takes as its starting point an element of figurative imagery, such as grasses reflected in a swamp, or the silhouette of a swimmer. Drawing from imagery developed at residencies and from her lived experience, a symbolic language has emerged through which she explores abstraction and metamorphosis.
