Artist Statement
Madhubani Art (or Mithila painting) is a style of Indian painting, practiced in the Mithila region of the Indian subcontinent. This painting is done with a variety of tools, including fingers, twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchsticks and using natural dyes and pigments.

Chandrakala Devi is the wife of late Dhaniklal Mukhia from Chakdah village in Madhubani district of Bihar. About sixty years of age, Chandrakala Devi is originally from Ranti village and she learnt Madhubani art from watching the elder women and prominent artists from there like Mahasundari Devi, and Godavri Dutt. She regards the famous artist Shashikala Devi as her mentor. Chandrakala started selling her paintings after the death of her husband over twenty years ago.
Hailing from the Mallah community, fishing was her main occupation. She is the sole breadwinner of a family of ten women which includes her four daughters, four grand-daughters and one grand-son. Her paintings are depictions of nature,trees and animals and many of her works revolve around village life.
