Artist Statement

IconCaretDown

“These growth rings are the memories of trees, and are nature’s yearly imprints. Within the small body of wood, stowed away are time fragments and the universe’s metamorphosis, as if expressing life’s perseverance and magnificence, they become ripples in circles. Also II have utilized meticulous painting (gonbi) to depict the bright resplendent transmutation of butterflies. Like the life of everything in the world, between wandering and searching in time and space, on earth and in the sky. By combing abstract and figurative painting, I search for a new perspective in ink painting, and simultaneously express my understanding and feelings towards the universe and life. I hope to respond to Lui Shou-kwan’s personal philosophy as demonstrated by his Zen paintings; that sort of feeling for life force, calmly facing every variable, yet at the same time praising nature.”-Cheuk Ka-wai, Cherie
