Chowwai Cheung is an English artist living and working in Devon.
Her work is informed by the landscape around her. Fascinated by rock formations, she crafts geometric landscapes that emphasise, the boundaries, between shape and form, exploring the interactions and tensions between depth, and surface.
Chowwai’s primary practice is collagraphs prints a form of intaglio printmaking. The process of collagraphs gives her access to both the hard-edged shapes, soft translucent tones and textures – intuitively working within each layer of ink. Hand finishing each piece in acrylic, giving her creative freedom to further develop and conclude each piece. She extends her collection by creating abstract paintings and works in collage that are influenced by memories of rural landscapes and fleeting moments.
Chowwai trained at Manchester Metropolitan University specialising in Printed Textiles. Graduating with a 1st class BA honours . She has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions including the Royal academy summer exhibition, Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Royal West of England Academy and the National Open Print Exhibition. And continues to receive commissions from corporations and private clients.
