About the art
Artist statement
Though this unique monotype resembles a watercolor painting or an aquatint etching, it is actually a form of photography called a cyanotype or photogram. It’s a one-of-a-kind multiple-exposure print. It is impossible to re-create exactly these lines and shapes and shades of blue as it was heavily manipulated by me during the exposure process.
A traditional single-exposure cyanotype yields a white image against a dark blue background. But instead of creating a white image by blocking light with solid objects on the light-sensitive paper, I used water to block the light, creating subtle gradations of darkening blue as I submerged the light-sensitive paper for different carefully timed exposures under water.
The image of two prints is showing a different one for sale next to this one. Both are the same size with similar names: “Faraway Hills 1” and “Faraway Hills 2”— but the price here is for only the last of those two prints not both.
