Artist Statement

The deepest water in the middle of the ocean is a deep dark indigo like this. This minimalist pattern painting is the first of this abstract series of the seven seas.
This painting on stretched canvas was done in such a way that it resembles a block printed cloth or wax-resist batik. I used hundreds of tiny hand cut stencil masks adhered one by one and then brushed fluid paint over them to give the sense of fabric dye over a painted wax design. The under layer is actually a variety of very pale blues and not a solid flat white, giving a sense of undulating ripples. The five columns vary in their shades of indigo rather like a quilt stitched together of different pieces of fabric.

This painting arrives ready to hang on stretched canvas with a hanging wire on the back. The 1.5 inch deep wooden sides are a clean bright white.
