These abstract paintings are something of a departure for me. Throughout my career to date I have always described myself as a photographic artist, but for a long time now I have found myself being drawn more and more strongly towards abstraction.
And then during lockdown this summer I spent some time renovating one of the rooms in our very old house. As we removed old kitchen cabinets from the walls I was able to see hundreds of years of paint and plaster. And the beauty of these layers of history was extraordinary. I photographed them and used the pictures as layers of texture in some of my photographic work, but I kept coming back to the feeling that these attractions deserved more than just playing supporting role in other imagery and should in fact themselves be playing the starring role. And so my experiments with oil and cold wax medium began.

Claire Newman-Williams is a British photographic artist. Whether crafting mixed media collages or photographic prints, Claire creates images that appear to have been pulled from the no-mans land that exists between imagination and reality. These images, often described as “filmic” and “haunting”, leave us wondering which world they inhabit. Are they created in our contemporary world, or are these vintage-looking images visual echoes plucked from another era?
Her art work has been exhibited at the London Art Fair and Miami Context with Turner Barnes Gallery and she was named one of 4 must-see artists at The Other Art Fair, Bristol by Rebecca Wilson of SaatchiArt.
Although she studied English at University, Claire went on to work in photography, learning her craft in seven years of freelance assisting in America. This was followed by 20 years experience as an editorial and portrait photographer in both the UK and the US where her work has appeared in numerous national and international publications including Time Magazine, The New York Times and The Advocate. She returned to the UK in 2005 and in 2014 began to focus more on fine art photography and collage.
Using a mixture of historical processes, analog and digital cameras, her inspiration comes from sources as diverse as the etchings of Rembrandt, the films of modern cinematic masters like David Lynch, or the loneliness of the music of Lucinda Williams.
