The Wolf and the Dove. They appeared in this painting suddenly and I knew it was finished. The symbology of the dove- peace, freedom, love and the wolf- loyalty, family, protection and other noble traits. The characteristic they have in common? Freedom.
As I see it, the wolf is behind the wheel of a car and the dove appears to have its wing on the shoulder of the wolf; or maybe even riding alongside? Either way, abiding poetically in the same space.

Artist Profile

Born: 1959

Hometown: Manhattan Beach

Based in: Aptos

Cynthia Spillman is a native Californian and multidisciplinary artist, living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area.

She spent several years in Hawaii as a Radio DJ, farmer and artist, making hand-painted Lava Lava's from her Kalapana, Big Island studio.
In 1990, both her home and studio were destroyed by the Kilauea lava flow.

Relocating to San Francisco for a radio job, she began a career in Acting and Voiceover. It was not until a later move to Los Angeles that Cynthia resumed painting and the visual arts. She was invited to attend the Santa Monica College of Design, Art and Architecture, a school centered in an idiosyncratic “free rein” approach. At the DAA, she was given a studio space and was able to pursue a way of working that unfolded from her naive-like drawing skills; developing an ethos of directness and sincerity as paramount to artistic communication.

A fundamental thread is woven through her work and her process; an instinctive mandate to express Truth, above all else.

Spillman’s work is included in numerous private collections, and has been shown in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, and Santa Cruz. Her studio is located inside a giant bamboo nursery.
