WOODEN 3D WALL SCULPTURE
Carving and marquetry
Brisbane, 2022
My technique is my own, non-traditional. I combine marquetry with carving, engraving, layering and colourscreating
For me art is a “felt” process; sometimes, the aim is to explore, and sometimes to express. The choice of shapes and colours is an emotional decision. “I really enjoy pursuing the challenging pathway to abstraction. I believe that abstract art engages you at another level. You have to stop trying to understand it and just feel it.”

Artist Profile

Born: 1975

Hometown: Brisbane

Based in: Brisbane

Dagmar grew up in former Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) and moved to Australia 22 years ago. Now she lives in Brisbane and makes her craft at her home studio. Being a self-taught woodworker since 2014 has allowed her to explore the craft and fine-tune her skills. Dagmar is interested in materials and design that are not traditionally associated with mass production and standards of perfection.

She works with a few different mediums - wooden veneers, stone veneer and starting to implement Mother of pearl.

“Lots of Marquetry artists use a scroll saw, I do all my cuttings by knife. It's more time consuming but it allows me to produce more detailed work”.

Dagmar is most known for her sculptural wooden wall hangings, with a modern flair.

“Marquetry challenges me to pay close attention to detail, every cut has intention, and I let the grain of the wood lead and inspire me! Each piece is a reminder of the close relationship that exists between us and Mother Earth”.
