Artist Profile
Born: 1987
Hometown: Toronto
Based in: Berlin, Germany
David Hanes (b. 1987) is a visual artist. He originally hails from Toronto, Canada, and now lives in Berlin, Germany. His work ranges from drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture. And, as a continued student of both the classic antiquities as well as modern technology, David brings unique perspective and mindfulness into his daily approach to both art-making, as well as living with gratitude. After learning about Robert Rauschenberg’s "Erased de Kooning Drawing" (1953) at an early age, my understanding of art was totally annihilated. As a consequence, I began—decades later—working on heavily altered & symbolic images that occupy the border between abstraction, representation, and iconography. My work comes with a mixture of enthusiasm and unease, questioning how art is experienced in an age of digital stimulation and spiritual abandonment. My augmented idea of art seems to tell a story of resistance, beauty and erasure, always probing the viewers imagination and openness in search of new images.
