Artist Statement
Cantilever is one of a recent series of plots exploring a more architectural approach to form, creating stucture by adding together lots of indivdual, cuboid skeletons. In this case, they all share one co-ordinate in common, which creates the "wall" facing the viewer. Applying algorithmic generation processes to 3D rather than 2D spaces opens up a huge new spectrum of possibilities, and while it also comes with a significant new set of technical challenges, the opportunity to explore volume as well as area makes it worth it! One challenge is the rendering of the 3D structure on a two dimensional plane. Here I've created the illusion of light and shadow within the volume by using different densities of shading across the internal faces.
