Artist Statement
This painting is inspired by the drawings of Michelangelo - the beautiful and strong anatomy of the humans he was creating are a characteristic of his style. To emphasize this even more, Virtosu has used his innovative "thick paint" technique to add a layer of depth into the painting.
Popping out from the canvas, the paint dabs on this hand create a powerful contrast with the smooth and perfectly even background gradient. A contrast not only in color but also in texture - this painting will look different in various lighting conditions - depending on how the sun illuminates it. It will cast shadows and show its true power - its volumetric dimension.
An ode to color, "First Hand" uses the full expressiveness of pure oil colors squished straight out of the tube and onto the canvas to convey the powerful message of art.
