Recreates the culminating section of the famous Chinese 12th century hand scroll, Qingming Shanghe Tu / Along the River during the Qingming Festival, attributed to Zhang Zeduan (1085-1145). Allchurch chose to set her recreation in modern-day Xi’an, once the eastern departure point of the Silk Road, and a melting pot of cultures and religions. The work offers a bird's eye view of the journey of everyday city dwellers as they negotiate life before, during, and after the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reading from right to left, in keeping with traditional Chinese hand scrolls, busy streets and groups of tourists in the opening sequence give way to deserted streets through a lockdown period, followed by a gradual reopening and a 'new normal' of face masks and social distancing. The 2m width of the finished piece is a direct response to government social distancing recommendations as the UK emerged from the first wave of COVID-19 lockdown.
