Artist Profile

Hometown: Kuala Lumpur

Lives and Works: Singapore

One of Southeast Asia’s leading contemporary painters, Eric Chan’s signature floral paintings are composed of subtle strokes and layered veils of colour, imbuing his work with a distinct radiance as though viewed through a diffused lens. His paintings are shaped by photographic aesthetics, from blurring or smearing to simulate slow shutter speed, to the tonal inversions of film negatives. In his most recent work, he combines flora and fauna with human figures, occasionally placing them over random tracts of text for their aesthetic calligraphy. Working with oil on canvas or linen, Chan deftly handles his media with precision and deliberation in the pursuit of hyperrealism.

Chan earned his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art at Lasalle, graduating with distinction in painting; he went on to obtain his Masters in Fine Art from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia. Since graduating in 2000, he has held exhibitions in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Australia, UK, UAE and the Philippines. In 2002, he was awarded the Juror’s Choice at the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards, and in 2003 the Highly Commended accolade at the UOB Painting of the Year Competition. In 2007, Chan was the first artist to inaugurate the BMW Young Asian Artists series in collaboration with the Singapore Tyler Print Institute. His works have been collected by the Singapore Art Museum, CapitaLand, UOB, UBS, OCBC, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Burger Collection. Chan’s work has also been auctioned by Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and Larasati. Chan divides his time between London and Singapore.
