Gold itself is viewed as a ‘pure’ colour, unchangeable in its appearance. Given its prevalence in Malay culture and craft, its use in these contemporary artworks strongly grounds them within a Malaysian contemporary framework, generating their relevance within both local and international contexts. Fauzin’s use of the gold dots as a metaphor for deeper philosophical concepts is in fact strongly in line with the aim of abstract expressionist artists. In the tradition of abstraction, elements are not intended to visually reproduce objects outright; rather they are clues into the viewer’s conceptualization of objects and ideas. With his seminal new body of works presented in Life Between the Dots, Fauzin is in fact encouraging his audience to examine their existing relationships with concepts such as patriotism, the environment and spirituality, by producing a visual system through abstraction that challenges the audience to look at the artworks - and by extension the world around them - in a new way.

Fauzin Mustafa is an eminent Malaysian contemporary artist that celebrates nature's sovereignty and tropical colours through metaphoric, symbolic and dominant leaf iconography.
Renowned for his mixed media practice since the 1990s, Fauzin combines thoughtful concepts with the formalistic aspects of fine art through recognisable Malay iconography, thereby enabling his audience an easy yet interesting visual experience. Influenced by his environment, his artworks are often representational of the landscapes and cultures that are truly Malaysian.
His innovative play with batik and Malay iconography as well as proverbs provides a viable shift of the modernist to contemporary art whilst showcasing the best of the lesser-known Malaysian culture to the world.
A Fine Art graduate, Fauzin holds several notable awards such as the Young Contemporaries competition, Salon Malaysia, ASEAN Youth Painting and Philip Morris Asian Art Awards. His artworks are collected by private and public collectors locally and internationally.
