This sculpture was made for the SEKIMORI ISHI MODERN exhibition. In the period from September 2013 to September 2015, this international traveling exhibition was shown at 5 locations in the Netherlands and France.
Sekimori ishi: (literally: stacked stone; figuratively: boundary stone; stop stone.) Is an old 16th century Japanese custom.
For "Sekimori Ishi Modern" I started from the stone as a modest marking, yet clearly present. The sculpture fits into a natural environment. It's not about the big gesture, but about the details: for example the way of connecting, the interplay of volumes, the balancing of forms or the inner space through which light falls.
The sculpture is made out of granite and limestone, connected by a rope. It's suitable for the outside.

Fieke de Roij, stone sculptor, based in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
After years of working with all kind of materials, in 1994 I discovered stone sculpting. From that moment my choice was made. With the start of my company ‘Werk in Steen’ in 2005, I wanted to further professionalize my working as a sculptor and create a place to convey my love for the profession. Since 2007 I organize classes stone sculpting in my studio in Utrecht city. And also summer courses on locations in The Netherlands, Germany and France.
In 2019 I celebrated my 25 years of stone sculpting and the many years of teaching.
The stone itself is my source of inspiration. That’s were it all starts and that’s why I constantly collect them: from containers, from the street, as a gift from people, but also from the sculpture shop.
My sculptures are clear and abstract. They arise intuitively, by combining forms and materials. While working I am constantly in search for simplicity and balance. The traces of the making process remain visible, often in the structure of the chisel stroke, but also in fracture surfaces or surface finishes. That gives the sculptures a personal signature. With clear lines and surfaces I try to evoke a powerful form.
My sculptures try to evoke an atmosphere or association. As a viewer you can make your own interpretation.
Regularly I take part in exhibitions. You can find an overview on my website.
