Artist Statement
It took a while for this sculpture to be finished. It consists of nine separate parts, and each part requires attention and time. It originated from a series of old building blocks of a garden wall, Asian bluestone. The base of each shape is a square, varying in shape upwards. Still somewhat sketchy due to the hand-carved structure and the irregularity of the stone.
The repetition creates rhythm and movement. Several configurations are possible, which can also evoke different associations. I do have a preference for a clear pattern (for example as a block or row).
Also suitable for outdoor.

Fieke de Roij, stone sculptor, based in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
My sculptures are clear and abstract. They are created intuitively, by combining shapes and materials. While working I searche for simplicity, tension and balance. The sculptures evoke an atmosphere or association and give room for individual interpretation.
I uses a form language that is universally recognizable and appreciated worldwide. You can find my work in private collections across many countries.
Background:
After years of working with all kind of materials, in 1994 I discovered stone sculpting. From that moment my choice was made. With the start of my company ‘Werk in Steen’ in 2005, I wanted to further professionalize my working as a sculpture and create a place to convey my love for the profession.
Since 2007 I organize classes stone sculpting in my studio in Utrecht city. And also summer courses on locations in The Netherlands, Germany and France.
In 2019 I celebrate my 25 years of stone sculpting and the many years of teaching.
Education:
College of Education Utrecht, teacher training Textile and Crafts (1982-1988)
Academy for Visual Arts The Hague (1995-2000)
