Artist Profile

Born: 1992

Hometown: Cebu City, Cebu

Based in: Cebu City, Cebu

A painting major graduate in the Bachelor in Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines Cebu, G.I. Pongase utilizes colors and texture to create non-figurative expression in painting. The artist aims to visually generate the thoughts and sentiments of his life experiences by utilizing multiple layers in abstract works.

Growing up in a family of craftsmen and engravers, the artist vividly remembers the image of his father making drawings, who introduced him to art at a young age. This memory became an inspiration towards his own journey to become an artist. Obtaining a painting degree and making his father proud, the artist sought continued guidance from his former mentors and kept on developing his painting style. Through various material experimentation of utilizing non-traditional mediums, the non-figurative composition in art became a personal challenge in the search for aesthetic fulfillment in the creative process. He reaches out to the raw emotions ‘within’ him in the production of art by associating abstract thoughts with the solidity of the canvas ground. A deep and ambiguous connection would inform the artist of a clarity that he can only feel whether a particular creation has reached completion or not. The process is comparable to solving a riddle as the artist would say.
