Geraldine ‘Gigi’ Ocampo is a practicing artist and academic. She completed her degree in Fine Arts major in Painting at the University of San Carlos and she is currently working on her MFA at the University of Santo Tomas. She is a member of the Regional Art Forum, an organisation of artists, writers, scholars, cultural workers, and counter-experts that cater to the needs of region- based art practices.

Ocampo’s artworks depict issues concerning women. One is the objectification of women’s role in the society where her female figures often contradicts with society's concept of ideal beauty. She juxtaposes her female figures with intriguing metaphors such as moustache on the faces, smudged lipsticks on the mouths, and huge crowns over the heads. The crown suggests people’s material fixations. The lipstick connotes people’s attachment to the superficial ideals of beauty, while the moustache symbolises the transgression in the dichotomy between sexes. These devices work as metaphors designed to interrogate patriarchy. She says that the stereotypes and images that dominate women need to be contested. This gesture is apt and timely in that women need to find their voice using the very space or profession that they happen to occupy. In Ocampo’s case, her space is her art (Apa, 2017).

For her MFA thesis, Ocampo is working on another art format—assemblage. She explores on sexual violence against women where she plays with texts, found objects, and painting in her assemblage. In this project, Ocampo uses the format of assemblage as platform to comment on issues about sexual violence and misogyny that confront women even today.
