Artist Statement

Painting from the series Spatial history.
In this series, Parr revisits places and journeys that are often defined by emotion and melancholy. Tensions between past, present and future, joy and saudade, presence and absence continue to inhabit her visual language, expressed through a set of coded references and metaphors, whilst she explores the balance of spontaneity and considered control during the painting process.

Parr uses pallet knife, brush and sponge building up layers of paint and charcoal and washing away in a process that becomes as important to remove as to add, a reverberation of relationship with the canvas of addition and subtraction, push and pull.
The Artist intends to create something that is ambiguous, chimerical, organic and elemental.

Signed and dated on the side of the canvas the painting is unframed and ready to hang. The canvas is deep edged 4cm which shows small signs of the working process to the canvas sides.
