Guang-Yu Zhang’s eclectic compositions convey a nostalgia driven by traditional Chinese motifs, motifs that conflate seamlessly with the artist’s eye for soft although striking color schemes. This choice of color sets him apart from the artistic crowd, presenting a diffusion of tones that yield sometimes dreamy and other times nightmarish qualities to his work, creating an immersive paradisiacal-yet-surreal realm that draws those who set eyes on the same. A soothing world, a thrilling world, an Elysium where earth and sky intertwine, where light and darkness are one and the same.

His varying use of canvas shapes, photographic manipulation, and shadow boxes further enhance the works’ magical quality. He does not shy away from mixing traditional Chinese elements with the flashy sensibilities of Pop.”
