Natural processes are depicted in his work, where paint coagulates on the surface of the canvas to react with previous and subsequent layers. He has developed a full repertoire of actions hand thrown paint, smearing, squirting, dribbling, spread with mops, or brushed on with brooms. It travels across the canvas under the influence of gravity, to pool and puddle; it explodes in splashes of droplets dropped from a heightened level; it shoots across the canvas with explosive force. Haafiz draws with his whole body, with large sheets of canvas spread out before him on the studio floor. The image of Haafiz’s act quickly calls to mind Jackson Pollock’s action painting where the act makes the image. This forms the first layers of abstraction.
