Artist Statement

Hayatuddin’s meticulously-applied brushstrokes fill the surface of his surreal works, with handpainted backgrounds in various colours that form intricate mazes. The subject matter is both foreign and hybrid, reminiscent of children’s books and lucid dreams, with a sense of poetry and adventure. However, the artist speaks of the realities of modern urban living - such as concerns for safety and security, or the multiple concerns and need for knowledge that fills the brain when it comes to figuring out how to co-exist on a social level. One wonders if Hayatuddin beckons us into the whimsical world where imagination thrives, or encourages us to retreat to it as a form of escapism - when the horrors of reality become too difficult to bear.
