Artist Statement
Gumam, which means mumbling, is an act of expressing oneself without the need of being understood clearly by others. It describes Hedi’s artistic process, in which he inscribed the canvas with scribbles made of thick layers of impasto then washed the canvas with transparent layers of paints to blend them together into a unity of visual composition. This painting not only can be seen through its formal qualities but also emit a certain lyrical quality that might evoke different emotions in each viewer.
