Artist Statement
Gentle Shower of Light celebrates nature's perpetual movement - the vibrating, changing, moving particles of matter and energy. The technique uses fluid paint applied in layers and dried partially before washing away the surface. This leaves a patina effect similar to what one finds in nature. The canvas is lightly textured with gesso and silica sand which gives a sense of form and tactility. The grey background adds a dimension of space. There is a soft warm light that permeates the entire composition. The edges are left painted revealing the creative process. The painting i s signed on the back and is ready to hang.
"I paint two styles of work – multicolor and monochrome. The multicolors resemble light phenomena seen in nature – a brightening sunrise, burning flame, brilliant aurora, light rays breaking through a forest. In contrast to these vivid images, the monochromes express subtler qualities of light – a shimmering milky way, dust particles catching sunlight, glow of moonlight on a grassy field. Both the monochromes and multicolors are wholly abstract; void of identifiable subject matter, concepts, symbols or themes. They do not burden viewers with intellectual analysis and can be simply enjoyed for their color and light."
Canadian art critic John K. Grande writes: "Contemplative and poetic, these paintings by Heidi Thompson invite contemplation for the surface carries a gentle and harmonious action while remaining set in the materiality of the moment. And this materiality suggests an infinite and invisible journey, one we are all embarked on, that is ongoing. Thompson’s paintings evoke a real nature in that her process is less about the ego-systems of historical progression that Abstract Expressionism and modernism were all about, but instead suggests a basic respect for the ecosystem of body and mind and spirit and the nature that all art is part of."
