About the art
Artist statement
Sunlit City is part of a new series of paintings inspired by walks along the Thames footpaths during lockdown. Hermione’s inspiration is drawn from architecture and the natural world from which she translates experiences as snapshots of her memories. Through her artistic approach and way of observing, she interprets three-dimensional forms as abstract shapes, portraying memory as she experiences it both viscerally and sensorially.
The skyrise architecture in Sunlit City is expressed as a series of cubic shapes reflected in the water. Tower blocks are hinted at with suggestions of windows and structures.
Hermione paints directly in multilayers of oil on a birch plywood box panel. She brushes the sides in a colour gradient to reflect the mood of the painting itself. As seen from different angles, the painting takes on a sculptural form and the picture can be hung framed or unframed.
