Hometown: Nghe An, Vietnam.
Based in: Vietnam
Painting since fifteen and enrolled in art school at seventeen, Ho Huu Thu’s initial influence was the western art of Gauguin, Picasso and Chagall. Subsequently it was Buddhist philosophy and Nguyen Gia Tri, one of Vietnam’s best known lacquer masters (1906-1993), who inspired the artist.
Elements of impressionism and Buddhist spirituality are captured within Thu’s works. Light is powerfully used, creating layers and subtle shades that draw us deeper into the composition. Wherein lies an enchanting world of innocence and peace, of ethereal beauties, maidens on a pilgrimage and mother with child.
The translucency on his canvasses creates a sense of spiritual formlessness, transporting the viewer to a meditative plane.
One of Southeast Asia’s most important and respected artists today, Ho Huu Thu is one of the few contemporary Vietnamese artists with works represented at major international sales. A tireless artist, we can look forward to more of his enchanting creations in the years to come.
Among the founders of the Young Artists’ Association (1966), Thu is one of the most influential and respected artists in Vietnam today, with his works regularly featured at international auctions. He stands apart as a master, establishing trends in Vietnamese painting and leading the younger generation of artists.
