Huang Zhiyang 黄致阳 (b. 1965, Taipei, Taiwan. Lives and works in Beijing)
“Zoon - Dreamscape” series (2008-present)
ink and pigment paint on zhuan paper. Huang Zhiyang is widely regarded as a master of innovation using traditional ink and brush painting. His gestural 360-degree painting, placing the xuan paper on the floor, walking around it and painting freely from the four sides, has been likened to the abstract “action painting” works of American artist Jackson Pollack. This would however be a misnomer, since it undermines the scholarly training and skill Huang possesses in the use of the ink and brush. His calligraphic prowess, and his sophisticated engagement with Chinese traditional painting history and technique are what underlie his exciting tour-de-force love of ink and brushwork abstract painting. Huang represented Taiwan in the Taiwan Pavilion at the 1995 Venice Biennale, and had a career retrospective exhibit in 2014 at China’s National Museum on Tiananmen Square. Huang’s work is collected by the US State Department’s Art in Embassies Program, the UBS Bank, Switzerland, Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and private collections.

Artist Profile
Born: 1965
Hometown: Taiwan
Based in: Taiwan
Huang Zhiyang, who was instructed in Chinese calligraphy as a child, is recognized for his large-scale oil paintings, ink washes on silk, and drawings on paper. His work has been summarized by critics as the application of traditional Chinese techniques to an American tradition of Abstract Expressionism. Frequent motifs in Huang’s work make reference to the natural world, particularly to bamboo and landscapes, though the images are not immediately recognizable. Huang also produces abstract installations, and has worked in sculptural materials like bamboo and gilded bronze. His work has also been prominent in fashion: Huang’s drawings are source of inspiration for the French fashion designer Anne Valerie Hash, and in 2011 he collaborated with the designers of ETRO to produce a line of silk scarves.
