Inspiration isn’t a thing to find in the outside world, it’s internal. The root of the word literally means ‘breathe in’ or ‘to breath life into’ and we’re the one doing the breathing without having to think of it. We can be inspired by the most mundane thing if we’re allowing ourselves to feel. It’s not always the same because we’re human and what we’re experiencing is different from moment to moment. I’ve found different ways of working when I’m in different states of being which allows me to be constantly “inspired.” I’ve made a number of paintings similar to this one as it’s a challenging way to create a composition with a very limited palette. The nuances of paint application, the dance of the edges along side one another, the subtle value and color saturation shifts can be played with over and over so long as these sensibilities are happening rather than being forced. Let go of your breath and you’ll certainly breathe in again.

Artist Profile

Born: 1982

Hometown: New York

Based in: Hudson New York

Huê (hWay) Thi Hoffmaster, the son of Vietnamese and American parents, is a painter living and working in Hudson, New York. Huê studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (2001 - 2005) and is shamelessly a multidisciplinary painter working in different styles from objective/figurative works to nonobjective and abstract paintings drawing artistic inspiration through self development, healing, playful expression, and the joys and sorrows of life.

“Listening” may be the most effective word to describe what I’m doing when painting. I simply set up my work area with colors and tools and I attempt to get into a flow state where I’m observing what I’m doing rather than directing, as if the painting is something that is happening naturally and I’m not doing anything at all other than listening and observing. This practice has been derived from life experience, becoming aware of and exploring an internal landscape full of color, emotion, energy, joys, and sorrows. I haven’t even scratched the surface and will continue to play and explore there.
