Artist Statement

Working in solitude, creating pictures on rectangles is seemingly pointless, perhaps it could be considered doing nothing in the sense that it’s not about being productive, gaining any tangible capital, or directly contributing to capitalism. To me, the real reward is confronting the challenge of being with myself through darkness and light and finding something to create from the nothingness and whatever state I’m in. The struggle is never about the task and always about how to get over what’s blocking me or how to harness what’s open and let it flow. The painting isn’t about the paint and the process of painting, rather, it’s about the internal activity that’s going on which will inevitably show itself, without even having to think of it, if tapped into while painting.

Artist Profile

Born: 1982

Hometown: New York

Based in: Hudson New York

Huê (hWay) Thi Hoffmaster, the son of Vietnamese and American parents, is a painter living and working in Hudson, New York. Huê studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (2001 - 2005) and is shamelessly a multidisciplinary painter working in different styles from objective/figurative works to nonobjective and abstract paintings drawing artistic inspiration through self development, healing, playful expression, and the joys and sorrows of life.

“Listening” may be the most effective word to describe what I’m doing when painting. I simply set up my work area with colors and tools and I attempt to get into a flow state where I’m observing what I’m doing rather than directing, as if the painting is something that is happening naturally and I’m not doing anything at all other than listening and observing. This practice has been derived from life experience, becoming aware of and exploring an internal landscape full of color, emotion, energy, joys, and sorrows. I haven’t even scratched the surface and will continue to play and explore there.
