Artist Statement

Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano designed by Francesco Borromini is the oldest public church in the city of Rome, and the oldest basilica of the Western world. However, in the present brilliant study by Ilya Zorkin it is captured without pretence.

Painted on location upon the artist's first visit to Rome in 2017, it is characterized by loose and precise application of paint that creates a feeling of immediacy and a sense of spontaneity, typical of Ilya's best works. Sweeping brushstrokes of blue and warm sun-white as well as the artist's decision to allow areas of the toned canvas to show through infuse the composition with a joyful and playful mood.

This unique original artwork comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist. The artwork is unframed.

All artworks from our gallery ship safely to your door with DHL Express in a custom-made plywood crate. Framing options available - please contact The Artling if you need any help with this.

Large scale historical paintings, thorough development of the theme, ethnographic accuracy, multi-figure compositions and virtuoso execution is what Ilya Zorkin excels at.
