Insomnia’s a bitch, isn’t it? When I was born, the doctors said that all I’d have to do to sleep for 100 years is poke my finger once. My parents were naturally scared. They removed every sharp object from our home, and never let me play outside. But I’ve had it. I’ve spent the last three days trying to prick it properly, and I have nothing to show for it except a sore finger and an increased distrust for medical staff. China had their own sleeping beauty, you know. Her name was Xin Zhui, or Lady Dai. Her tomb was discovered in the Mawangdui archaeological find of 1972 among some 3,000 valuable artifacts. But who cares about the stuff? The real treasure was Lady Dai herself, whose 2,200-year-old body was almost completely preserved. Her fingers were flawless; there wasn’t a pin-prick in sight. Yet there she was, still sleeping and still dreaming. She never got her prince, just her skull peeled expertly back so that curious doctors could see what was inside. All the textbooks say they liked what they found. I’m just happy that Lady Dai got some rest.
