Before we start, I would like to make sure you do know the dos and the don’ts. First of all, do let me know if my presence makes you uncomfortable. Do say whatever you need me to do. And do love me. Don’t, however, let me out of your hands. Don’t, under any circumstances, feel ashamed. And don’t think you are going against tradition. Because what is tradition, after all? Tradition in the Confucian sense is building up the world into what it is today and building it further from there. It is doing what our ancestors did and handing it over to the younger generation. But as cells change when multiplying, tradition transforms, too. What makes us human? Our erected posture? Our hairless bodies? Or the thoughts and ideas that we absorb, reshape, and share? Did the tradition of Chinese poetry start with the Book of Songs? Is Xu Bing’s deconstruction of writing also part of the tradition of writing itself? You know the answer. It’s not representation, it’s a performance. It’s about showing that everything within you comes from your creators. One movement, even a single bow is enough. Let me, then, welcome you to our new-old humanity.
