Jia Zhangke’s movie Still Life ends with the main character Han Sanming looking into the distance where a funambulist is balancing on an electric wire strung between two soon-to-be-demolished buildings. That’s what it feels like when we look at things in the present, but we know it’s just a matter of moments until they become past. In the not-so-distant future, however, I believe there will be no past, as living in the present moment is already preferred; building for the sake of movement is desired. For looking back is looking at distorted memories, living has become similar to homelessness without any comfort to go back to and not having clear view of where we are going. The present, in this very sense, is the timeless manifesto of the ever-present living artist – a concept in-itself that regards the world as empty form that needs to be reinvented across time. “Present” lives in the feelings that we can’t recall, as recalling feelings means evoking the present itself; it is the time-traveler’s paradise. Present is perfect.
