Think of a sphere. If we each drew a spherical shape, for example a circus ball, on a piece of paper, our pictures are likely to be imperfect. Colors, size, angles etc. In Plato’s world, this spherical shape resides in the physical realm, when ultimate reality exists beyond. The Theory of Forms is a philosophical concept which explains these two worlds, the physical and spiritual. In this physical world is all the material stuff we see and interact with, it’s constantly changing and flawed. It’s not real or true, consider the chair you’re balancing on, it’s an inferior version of the perfect idea of a chair. Plato called this perfect ideal the Forms, the non-physical essence of all things like beauty, roundness, blueness, or goodness. There is a Form for everything in existence from balancing elephants to juggling monkeys. The physical realm is only a flawed echo of imitations and copies. Behind this unreliable world is the spiritual realm, or Realm of Forms. A world of permanence and reliability. The stakes are higher but in perfect symmetry and harmony. As it should be.
