The swing of art is circular, from form to formalism, from formalism to formlessness, from formlessness to form again. – Austin O’Malley

French painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard loosely described “The Happy Accidents Of The Swing” (1767) as a depiction of individual freedom, both physically and emotionally. The 18th-century oil painting depicts a young woman elegantly dressed in a lush rose ensemble on a swing. Her lover watches from below as she flings her shoe in the air surrounded by forest trees and a thick layer of fog. Sometimes freedom looks like this, a child’s game played by lovers hiding from the rest of the world. Other times freedom resides in self-fulfillment and mindfulness practice. Being present in this moment, this thought, this feeling, being swept off your feet! We often enjoy the simplicity of life, fleeting ordinary moments swept away like a pendulum in an unpredictable pattern. As Isaac Newton said, there is always an equal or opposite reaction to every action, which serves as a reminder that any action has an end, yet the reaction continues to exist and evolve. What does freedom look like to you? Perhaps you’d like to try adding a bit of spontaneity to your daily rhythm. Or maybe you prefer the swings? That’s a sweet idea as well, sway away!
