Once upon a time, there was a girl named Quan Yin (观音), the youngest, smartest and most talented daughter of a king. She cared about everybody and they all loved and adored her. The king wanted her to marry a prince and be heir to the throne, but all she wanted was to study as the pomp of the court held no sway with her interests. Before her wedding, she snuck out of the palace, dressed as a poor girl and went to a cloister. Although the nuns let her stay, not knowing who she was, they treated her as a servant and had her dust all day long. One day her father was furiously knocking on the gates after he figured out where she’d been hiding. Quan Yin was taken back to the palace and was given two choices: she either devotes her life to the kingdom or she must go to the underworld. She loved her father, but couldn’t obey. She was sent to the lower world where such a pure soul had never been before. As soon as she entered, the place magically turned into paradise. No wonder Quan Yin became the Goddess of Mercy.
