Artist Statement
I usually choose a set of limitations and work on a series of variations. After experimenting with different inks and papers I settled on sumi and walnut ink on mulberry paper for this series. I work spontaneously with restraint. By diluting the ink somewhat randomly, I do not know exactly how transparent it will be until it dries. The obstacles, awkwardnesses, surprises, and adaptations reflect the passage of the period of time I work on each series. I look for a sense of spaciousness, energetic stillness, radiance, balance, luminosity, liveliness, presence. Each piece documents a moment in time, an intuition toward some sort of harmonious unknown, the integration of impulses, territory as yet unexplored.

Artist Profile
Born: 1950
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Based in: Berkeley, California
Janine Brown has been a working artist all of her life. From an early age she began to wonder “What is this life? What is reality?” This led to a life-long habit of reading widely and to study of Asian art and philosophy. Her primary interest has been how to use these ideas every day to appreciate and enjoy the wonder of our existence. Working in her studio, walking, and tai chi are her daily practice. Hiking and camping throughout the western United States has provided deep inspiration from the natural world.
After graduation from the Art Practice Department of University of California, she has made her home and studio in Berkeley, California. Her work has been featured at the Berkeley Art Center and is represented by Kala Art Institute Gallery. It is in the collections of numerous hospitals, businesses, and individuals.
