I have always been interested in taking an idea or a set of limitations and allowing it to evolve over time. In 2015 I began stitching with raffia onto 5”x7” pieces of Asian paper. Over time the pieces got larger, included ink and gouache, and were mounted onto heavier paper or panels, often combining into diptychs or larger groups. In this series, “Darkness and Light,” I use simple materials to explore a deep nonverbal place of spaciousness, calm, and joy while at the same time experiencing the deeply disturbing challenges of our time.

Janine Brown has been a working artist all of her life. From an early age she began to wonder “What is this life? What is reality?” This led to a life-long habit of reading widely and to study of Asian art and philosophy. Her primary interest has been how to use these ideas every day to appreciate and enjoy the wonder of our existence. Working in her studio, walking, and tai chi are her daily practice. Hiking and camping throughout the western United States has provided deep inspiration from the natural world.
After graduation from the Art Practice Department of University of California, she has made her home and studio in Berkeley, California. Her work has been featured at the Berkeley Art Center and is represented by Kala Art Institute Gallery. It is in the collections of numerous hospitals, businesses, and individuals.
