These pieces are from a large series of 7"x 5" stitched raffia on mitsumata paper. At first I tried sewing with different types of paper and thread until I settled on this particular combination of handmade Mitsumata paper from Bhutan and raffia (paper ribbon.) I sometimes dye the paper or raffia with ink.
I am inspired by the Asian philosophies that emphasize emptying the mind and experiencing the energy that creates all things. I am inspired by the meditative nature of crafts such as basketry, textiles, Asian calligraphy. Increasingly, I focus on the daily practice of doing an activity that brings me into the present moment.
