About the art
Artist statement
This piece is 9"x12" in a 12.5"x15.5" white frame. It is from a large series of stitched raffia and ink on mitsumata paper. At first I tried sewing with different types of paper and thread until I settled on this particular combination of handmade mitsumata paper from Bhutan and raffia (paper ribbon.) I sometimes dye the paper or raffia with ink.
I am inspired by the Asian philosophies that emphasize emptying the mind and experiencing the energy that creates all things. I am inspired by the meditative nature of crafts such as basketry, textiles, Asian calligraphy. Increasingly, I focus on the daily practice of doing an activity that brings me into the present moment.

I love repetition and variation
I love paper
I love combining and recombining images into pairs that speak to one another.
I love the practice of seeing an image appear in my mind and then following where it goes
I love simple materials, the handmade, imperfection
I love to sit and sew
I love the interplay between spontaneity and restraint
I love creating a feeling of spaciousness within a small image
