This is a design I first created with my alabaster sculpture “entwined” and wanted to make it larger and out of marble. It is a single ribbon of marble that comes very close to itself but never touches as it wraps near itself repeatedly in an ever-twisting knot. It is an extremely challenging design with tight twists requiring carving with a mix of traditional stone carving tools as well as many improvised and hand-built tools custom for this piece. From the moment this 500+lb block of marble arrived (and I got to try some ancient Egyptian stone moving techniques to get it into place) until I finished 8 levels of hand sanding nearly 2.5yrs later I’ve enjoyed every minute I spent working on it.
