Artist Profile

Born: 1960

Hometown: Hangzhou, China

Based in: Paris

Born in Hangzhou, China, Jia Juan Li grew up in a family environment that instilled in her a keen interest in culture and encouraged her to pursue her interest in painting. She graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, China with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1986 and followed this up with a Master of Fine Arts from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1991. In 1996, the French government invited Jia to take up an art residency at the Ecole Superieure d’ Art in Aix-en-Provence. From 1998, Jia Juan Li has lived and worked in Paris, while visiting her homeland for a few months each year.

Over the last two decades Jia has received several prestigious awards and international recognition for her work. In 2011, Jia had a major retrospective at the Today Art Museum in Beijing followed by another major show at the Guiyang Art Museum in Guizhou in 2012. In 2012, Jia was also awarded the ‘Medaille d’Or – Peinture Figurative,’ the gold prize for figurative painting in the annual ‘Exposition de Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts’ at the Louvre Museum in Paris. In 2013, she was among forty Chinese and French artists chosen for an exhibition titled ‘CHIFRA’ held under the patronage of Mr. Francois Hollande to mark the 50th anniversary of Sino-French diplomatic relations. The touring exhibition was brought to the National Museum of Arts in Beijing, Guan Shanyue Art Museum in Shenzhen and the Chonquing Art Museum in 2014.

Jia’s paintings are inspired by her childhood memories of visits to the Forbidden City in Beijing and her mother’s bedtime stories. They have an imaginative, dreamlike quality to them, capturing vignettes from yesteryear. Her colour palette and fusion of European and Chinese painting techniques give her works a uniquely antique look and style.
