About the art
Artist statement
Travelling often provides the stimulus for new work. This work is part of a series inspired by the juxtaposition of neighbours’ house colours in a row of traditional fisherman’s cottages in Tenerife. Each house had a two colour palette creating a quadrant of colour contrasts at each boundary. The composition was developed from the rotation of two cross like forms which generated different permutations of overlapping shapes.
The paint layers were built up in response to the geometric framework with contrasting fluid washes of paint and areas of intense dense colour which highlight the interaction between the natural and manufactured. The painting evolved intuitively with varying degrees of control over the way gravity dictated the flow of drips in a similar way to earth processes such as sedimentation.
The painting can appear to be in the tradition of hard edged geometric abstraction but the colours, shapes and relationships are rooted in observation of the real world.
