Artist Profile

Born: 1971

Hometown: Samut Prakan

Lives and Works: Chiang Mai

Jirapat Tatsanasomboon, one of the '100 Painters For Tomorrow' from the 2014 book of renowned London-based art publishing house Thames & Hudson, has been confronting for the last 20 years modern western icons with the most representative and traditional figures of Thai culture, especially the characters of the Ramakien (Siamese version of the Ramayana).

Born in 1971 in Samut Prakhan, near Bangkok, Jirapat Tatsanasomboon started to paint during childhood. His first drawing at age of four was Hanuman, he developed a passion for super-heroes, influenced also by the icons he could see on posters and commercials, since his father was running an advertising billboard company.

Graduating in Fine Art from ChangMai University and then at the prestigious Silpakorn University in Bangkok, he chose to settle permanently in Chiang Mai. It is here that he found inspiration and good conditions for creating and becoming a full time artist, rather than a teacher, preferring international exposure to official competitions.

He is definitely one of those artists who can bring the contemporary Thai art scene to the stage of greater international recognition.

Jirapat has participated in many art exhibitions in Thailand, but also abroad, in Asia (Korea, Singapore, China, India, Malaysia), America (U.S., Argentina), Middle-East (Bahrain) and Europe (Monaco). In 2012 he was part of the large exhibition 'Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal' in Singapore. He sells regularly at international auctions and is collected worldwide.
