Oil on Sinamay
Sinamay is a loosely handwoven fabric, made of abaca fibre, a 100% eco-friendly material, from the processed stalks of the Abaca tree, a banana palm native to the Philippines. Abaca fibre is three times stronger than cotton and silk, and can last for over hundreds of years.

Artist Profile
Born: 1989
Hometown: Connecticut
Based in: New York City
Job Tibay is a Filipino-American artist who works on Saguran (Raffia) fabric and Sterling board. Living thousands of miles away from the Philippines inspired him to find a substrate that would best represent his heritage and style. In his desire to stay connected to his roots, he has chosen to work initially on Saguran instead of the traditional canvas. Saguran is handwoven from Raffia fiber, a 100% eco-friendly material from the Philippines. A few years later, he started working on Sterling boards. Its irregular and variegated patterns of wood strands, its rough and textured surface, as well as its sustainability as a resource, appealed to his aesthetics and ideals.
Job is currently pursuing his masters in Fine & Decorative Arts and Design at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York City, and lives with his wife Melissa in South Norwalk, Connecticut.
