What appealed to me about this motif was that every single reed stalk, together with its mirror image, has its own horizontal mirror axis. This is due to the different distances between the stalks. The ensemble of stalks and their mirror images are often reminiscent of Japanese characters. The color is created by the reflection of the sky.
I discovered the motif 10 years ago and then looked for it again every spring without success. I only found it again last year. The fact that it is so rare is due to the fact that it requires special conditions: in winter the lake must be frozen over. Then there must be a storm that breaks the stalks a few centimeters above the ice surface. And in spring the lake has to be as smooth as a mirror to reflect 8e short pieces of reed and the sky should have nice colours.

Artist Profile

Born: 1948

Hometown: Fahren

Based in: Fahren

I live in a small village in Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) 12 km from the Baltic Sea and spend many hours by the sea or in beautiful “Holstein Switzerland”.
My photographic interest is in the wonders and beauties of nature that have to do with physics in the broadest sense. With that I move in the field of tension between aesthetics, art and science. The physical gaze draws attention to astonishing phenomena that otherwise remain easily hidden becau-se of their "inconspicuousness", such as the colors of spider webs, the colors of the sea or fata mor-gana effects on the horizon. Explanation and scientific-historical classification of phenomena lead to a deeper experience for me. I would like to share this happiness with others through my photos and explanations. I used many of my nature photos in schoolclass and experienced how children and young people who were rather negative about physics found access to physics. The photos have also been incorporated into school books and teacher training lectures. Now, after my retirement, I have intensified my preoccupation with photos and I am making it public with exhibitions and on social media.
